BDS Safety Program

Phil Hibb - VP SafetyA safe, orderly, efficient warehouse is a key to a successful operation, that’s why Bennett’s Safety Culture is an award winning process that is followed in everything we do each and everyday. We know and understand that the warehouse plays an essential role in the way goods are sent, received, stored, and circulated throughout the facility.

At BDS we hold over 160 Safety Meetings yearly to continue to build on Our Safety Culture. We also have toolbox meetings prior to every work shift And these meetings are conducted by senior lead personnel or by the manager of the facility as well as from time to time someone from the corporate safety department. At these meetings we discuss many
of the items listed below:

  • Forklift safety - OSHA Housekeeping
  • Fire safety - Electrical safety
  • Hearing protection - Personal protective equipment
  • Slips and Falls - Back injury prevention
  • Accident/incident reporting - Emergency response
  • Communications - Violence in the workplace prevention

Housekeeping

To be able to keep your house in order, you need to have good housekeeping processes in place. Let’s
begin with a simple aspect of safety - so simple it’s often ignored. That’s Good Housekeeping is an
absolute must in a warehouse - not just for safety, but to be sure that everything is in its place.

That’s why at BDS we focus on making sure that:

  • Objects or materials in aisles or on the floor are clear
  • Materials stacked or stored are done correctly
  • Protruding nails, fasteners, and other loosely or insecurely items are taken care of!
  • Taking large items left where people can bump against them are removed
  • Trash strewn about that can cause someone to trip or slip are removed
  • Making sure that water, oil, or other liquid are cleaned up from the floor.

Material Handling

You must always be very alert when involved with material handling equipment. Whether you’re using
equipment or lifting and carrying yourself, we work with our staff to make sure that they have the proper
training and direction.

When operating:

  • No one but the operator should ever ride on a fork lift
  • Never stand or walk under the raised part of a forklift, even if it’s empty
  • Place forklift loads carefully so they’re stable and won’t fall off or tip the truck
  • Drive a forklift slowly
  • Keep forks - and loads - low and tilted back while moving.
  • Park a forklift with forks lowered and tilted flat, brake set, and key removed.

Loading Dock Safety

Yet another area where you use a combination of built-in protections and good sense is the loading
dock area. Check dock plate load capacity before piling up materials or starting to unload. Slide the
dock into place, rather than dropping it.

Pay attention to weather conditions on the loading dock area. To prevent slips and falls, keep the area
dry and don’t let ice form on it.

Overall Safety

We truly care about our employees not only at work but also at home. Its all about safety on the job
and at home. We encourage everyone to wear their seat belt when they leave work and not to
text while driving. We want everyone to make it home ALIVE !

At Bennett it’s our culture, its how we live and work each day, Safety is our leading value as an
Organization.

Because "WE CARE"
